Rockabilly Guitar - Fred Sokolow Page Two

harmony and theory back coverT-Bone Walker is mentioned but he shows us Chuck Berry. Chuck is good! Now he is teaching us Bar chords at the one four and five positions using the A shape and the E shape.

Then he teaches us the  note names so this is basic stuff suitable for beginners. Root notes on the fifth and sixth strings. He talks about three chord songs and I IV V / one four five! The tonic, sub-dominant and dominant major scale degrees.  We do licks in E and he shows us how to play them in A by moving the shape. So we are going back and forth between song riffs from That Will be the Day and Matchbox. Then we go to Carl Perkins' Blues Suede Shoes and chord substitution and 9th chords. Then we do the blues scale and he tells us about his guitar reference book. The he shows a good solo and shows us Eddie Cochran style pulls offs. The he tells us about other another book about Travis picking.

Chuck Berry's use of double stops using blues scale notes is examined in so-called detail, but its not really. There is no mention of harmony or thirds or sixths and a lot of other things are touched upon enough to make you feel inadequate. This will leave you asking more question than you had when you started if its all brand new to you and I think that is part of the idea. The agenda.

This guitar lesson says it will teach you Rockabilly guitar but it hopes that you don't know squat about guitar and that it will get you to buy more instructional material. I have seen this before and so have you. I always say Book learning is good. A good guitar reference book is a must have. There is no perfect such book however so you need a couple of them. Get used to it!

Having studied and absorbed a good guitar reference book teachings you will be in a position to get more out of any of these guitar lessons. If you know basic musical theory and have achieved some fret board awareness before being so darn sure you are ready to learn a style. You may not be the coolest kid on your block but you will be the smartest.
