Modern Techniques for the Electric Guitarist
- Dean Brown - Page Three

Anyway the chord voicing section assumes a knowledge on our part of the C major scale on the neck and starts us out with 4 note 7th jazz chords running us through major 7th, 7th , minor 7th and augmented 7 using different voicings with the root note on the 6th, 5th and 4th strings. He does them all in C and frankly as nice as that is to see in the pamphlet I already know this is basic jazz chord scales and where to find them. Still he explains quite well the tenth chord note concept and the same sound with a different voicing using triads from the 5 octave centers of the neck. Yea! The improvisational chapter is more about chord tones than scales where the focus is on the arpeggio of the chord being played. Here we talk about target notes and approach notes and the half step below and scale step above approach. Here it really helps if you know your notes on the fret board. The Ear Training section is more theoretical and where he pulls a key board out to make his point about ear training being perhaps the most important aspect. This is interesting if you haven't heard it before and he shows us some exercises where we compare the sound of one note to another.

All in all this is a pretty good guitar learning lesson but only if you are ready for it! Its advanced! The Menu's Minus One section are the 8 play along tracks from funk to blues! Its advanced.
