Beginning Guitar Soloing (or Playing Lead) - Gilbert and Marlis Page Two

A Contemporary Guide to Improvisation

Then we move to chord arpeggios and scale sequences. All this is just a quite an extensive overview of course and these subjects cant really be gone into in total depth here. Still these will give you a really good idea of what to focus on. Metronome drill and daily practice is how you get pay off! Harmony is the next area and here both of our teachers play electric guitar at the same time harmonizing with one another playing rhythm and lead using refinements of the exercises you have been practicing major, minor and blues sound with 3 short  studies mixing scales arpeggios and sequences.

back coverSequences is playing the scale and accenting thirds or any number of intervals ascending and descending in a 3-4 note pattern. Key center playing harmonized scale key of C also known as the Ionian mode. Next is modes with some playing examples in between where they play flashy lead licks over a really tight rhythm section. For each of the other 6 modes they show its modes scale and then play a number with the band in that mode. Mixolydian, Lydian, Dorian, Phrygian  and so on and they throw in a bunch more too like 2ndary Dominants and modulation.

Go buy and study this. A lot of guitar gold here to mine! Its like a map with tried and true tips, pointers and examples. I may never want to sound exactly like them but they are keeping it neutral and sober on purpose. I recommend this. It will extend your musical horizon in a big way. If you like to noodle with the notes and would appreciate some experienced and inspired guidance you'll come out of it well ahead if you apply yourself.
