The Clash - Michael Casswell Page Two

back coverAnyway I recommend this for people that own an electric guitar and an amp and can achieve some kind of sound they can live with that sounds like the Clash. That's not hard if you have the equipment.

If all you have is an acoustic guitar you could still learn the songs and sound pretty good too as long as you can be percussive to make up for the lack of a rhythm section which is a big part of this band. They had great rhythm. If you can sing too, well there you are!

I wont say I liked every Clash song I ever heard. But they sure could put songs together and tried to tell a story and make sense in their songs. Of course that's if you can understand the words. A lot of bands lyrics make no sense at all. They say the Clash were proto-punk or early punk but I'd call them anarchist-revolutionary before I'd call them punk. Then I'd call them punk. The Jam and the Sex Pistols were their contemporaries in the London scene of the day.

Our guitar instructor is Mr. Michael Casswell and he does his usual excellent job. Licklibrary wants you to come to their site so they wont give you a pamphlet but Michael seems to overcome this lack somehow.

So you will want to get your pad and pen out to write down some of these chords progressions as he teaches them to us. There isn't a whole lot of fancy lead guitar with lots of super fast note soloing on here either. Its solid stick to your innards kind of fare. Standard tuning!

There is a nice section called "Performances" where Michael plays through each of the songs for us in case we need to get our bearings. Once again I stress being able to get a good guitar sound to make the most of this lesson. How good a guitar player do you need to be to find this useful? You can never be too good mate!

A knowledge of C-A-G-E-D is mandatory because you will be playing partial 6 string shapes up the neck. He gives you the positions but still a little theoretical foundation will give you sturdier legs to stand on. Buy this but after your good guitar reference book purchase!
